Welcoming Jean de la Kethulle - Seeing with the Eye of Chicara

Jean de la Kethulle (B) is landscape architect by education, and he believes that every landscape is beautiful "by nature".  Combining earth and concrete, his sculptures are designed to ‘facilitate’ a very special visual experience, not only of this ‘Enchanted Garden’, but the entire landscape surrounding it – in a whole new way.

Welcoming back Laura Frennet - a Painter at Heart

Laura Frennet (F/B): is a painter by heart and occupation. In all her work, her love of nature, and especially trees, is ever-present:  «Each tree is a witness to a place and history, and in its own way it will communicate with Man and Nature. To me a single sentence says it all: ‘Never forget that you are the tree, always protect the communication with your roots, and let their Energy raise you up to the sky.’ »
This year Laura Frennet journeys to the center of ‘The Enchanted Garden’, below an old oak tree, with her long held dream...to make a mandala;
"It is a form based on the original circle, which has existed in nature since the dawn of time. “It is present in all manifestations of life: atoms, cells, and snowflakes, the embryo, the hurricane, and the solar system, the iris, and the prints of our fingers ...  For millennia, it has been used in religious and secular cultures: art rituals, stone circles and megaliths in prehistoric astronomical observatories, diagrams commercial development plans of companies, astrological, zodiac ...  It occupies an important place in the history of architecture, from ancient structures to the modern buildings: houses, Hindu and Buddhist temples, mosques, pyramids, cathedrals, city maps ..."

"The mandala reminds us of our relation to the infinite, the world that extends both beyond and within our bodies and our minds.”  Laura Frennet
Sketch/detail

Laura Frennet

Welcoming Jan Leenknegt - Glass art (B)

Jan Leenknegt (B):  “Art begins with light. Through the effects of light and dark, artist creates his universe. In sculpture the light plays with the spatial dimensions. In glass art the light radiates from within. The objects of Leenknegt reflect an intensely thoughtful use of materials and their properties, which perhaps may be read best as a spatial poem. In the poetry of Leenknegt's objects, the sun is a dream; a magic lantern which lights up the night as bright as day. All this in the unexpected possibilities of rhythmic organization.”

“I grew up in my father’s studio, among the beautiful mouth blown glass ... Themes to work with I have plenty of;  the elements, the cosmos, in short, life on and around the planet in all its forms. I want to co-create. I make my own world ... "

Tone Aanderaa - 'Forest Temple'; a painting becoming an installation

My primary work this year is what I call “(the interior of a) ‘Forest Temple’ “-the evolution of one painting in progress through more than 25 years of my life; 1988/89 – 2013; a journey that took me from Norway to US, and back again, through many experiences…..and finally my arrivalhere at Art Sanctuary (Belgium); where beautiful dreams were realized.
And then experiencing my mother’s sudden passing (3/8-2012).
My mourning brought me again to the forest…. a young and vibrant forest growing right here in this very garden... Where I could let my thoughts run, like the threads which always accompanied my mother; in her making and mending of fish nets, in her constant knitting, and in her ever present companion, the fish line... threads, threads, and threads again....

- And again this particular painting appeared to guide my way:
And so this painting - of a 'Five Crows Flying' (orig. title in 1988) becoming 'Forest Temple' - now evolved into an interior space, an installation: - with tapestries (threads), an earth floor, and a source (of inspiration from a forest).

'Forest Temple' - the installation - has a very special and beautiful sound installation created by Nicky Bendix

Welcoming back Luk Luts - Sculptor of Stone

Je beeld zit al eeuwen in de steen;
Enkel wat er “teveel” aan zit,
Moet je “even“ wegkappen…
Luk Luts

"The image is already in stone: I just remove the surplus."

Welcoming back Romeo Sr. Vangoethemd -

From discarded old iron in all shapes and form, new life arises – full of force and energy, striving, and breaking through – with elegance and often with a humoristic touch.

Welcoming back Fabrice Bellery - Ancient traditions with humour and great craftmanship

We are very happy to welcome back this artist, Babrice Bellery: blending ancient traditions with humour and great craftmanship

“Beeldhouwen is mijn richting, mijn inspiratie is oneindig …”.
Fabrice Bellery: “Sculpting in stone is my way, and the inspiration is endless and everywhere...” This young artist has a ‘young iconography’, though, as he often paints his stone sculptures, he will refer to the ancients of Egypt and Rome – with humour and originality.

Guy Deltour - Excellent Sculptor in Blue Stone (B)

We welcome this artist back to 'The Enchanted Garden' with the greatest pleasure!
He is special in so many ways;

Magic in a Philosopher's Stone
I know of a big and beautiful forest, and in this forest there is a castle, and in the castle there lives a man. This man is the king of all the lands as far as the eye can see.

At the edge of this beautiful forest, there lives another man. This man is not a king, and he doesn't live in a castle, and and he certainly doesn't rule over any lands. But all of the forest echoes his presence - Spring and Summer, Autumn and Winter – it is him you will hear; As the hardest stone is molded and shaped, the chisel is singing, as the philosopher's stone is springing to life.

“This blue stone sculptor is in harmony with nature in the midst of which he lives and creates his work. He works with fervour all year round with ‘Jurassic’ stone from the quarries in the neighbourhood and finalizes them with the finesse of a philosopher of art in the 21st century.“  (translated text from David De Graef)

Welcoming Gisèle De Rop - Artist and poet

Welcoming back Roland Menten - 'The Snail Man'

Roland Menten is one of my absolute favourite first encounters arriving in Belgium; Artistically and personally -
His generosity in creating new artistic encounters.....and his wonderful perspective on life, and his art:
'Kunst van het onthaasten' ('The Art of Not Hurrying') is refreshing and at the same time so very familiar (to me - having had a looooooooong 'snail period' in my own painting :)  - These very 'snail-paintings' helped me through a lot of longdrawn difficulties....)
To arrive in Belgium and encounter Roland's visions (always snails!) gave me a beautiful 'home-coming-feeling' :)
A poet in his own way, look out for his titles! :)

The life of the wood, and its' veins and colour, combined with emotions and dreams, makes up the essence of Will's creations.

And a constant theme in his work is 'The Dream of Flying'.

Will's Television sculpture courses (Teleac TV I) has brought his joy of wood sculpting to many other countries, among them Turkey, Sweden and Malta.
